Founder/President, Patent Attorney

Carolyn founded Elmore Patent Law Group, PC in 2003 after almost two decades in the patent field. She began her career at the United States Patent & Trademark Office (the PTO) as an Examiner in the organic chemistry group (Group 1200) in 1984. In 1988, she was recruited to work in the biotechnology group (Group 1800).  Carolyn became a Primary Examiner in 1991. One year later, she was named Acting Supervisory Patent Examiner in Group 1200, where she supervised and trained the examiners in the pharmaceutical and agrochemical areas.  During her tenure at the PTO, she granted approximately 250 patents and examined patent applications related to pharmaceuticals, enzymology, microbiology, herbicides, pesticides, lipid chemistry, and dyestuffs.

Carolyn left the PTO in 1992 when she joined a boutique intellectual property law firm. Approximately a decade later, she founded EPLG. Under her leadership, EPLG has had more than 850 US patents granted and published 650 international applications.

Expertise

Carolyn brings science, business and law together in developing strategic patent portfolios. Her insider’s view of the patent process means Carolyn knows successful, and unsuccessful, strategies for shepherding patent applications through what can be a very complex maze.   Carolyn has drafted and prosecuted patent applications in a wide variety of technologies, including medicinal chemistry, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, gene therapy, polymer chemistry, nanotechnology, formulation sciences, medical devices, physics, batteries, and engineering industries. Carolyn also counsels clients in matters relating to patent infringement, validity, licensing and intellectual property due diligence.

Outside the Office

When she is not working, Carolyn enjoys spending time with her partner, five children, adorable grandson and two dogs.  She rings English handbells with several local ensembles and is active in her church.
